A Chainsaw, Johnny Cash and Pounding on Clay:
I chose Matt Hardwick for the Chain Reaction show at Earth and Fire because my guests always delight when they encounter Matt's butterfly plates. Marveling at their colors and how well they stack, friends and family recognize something I admire about their maker: a balance between directness and complexity.
Matt and I met in graduate school at the Univeresity of Nebraska-Lincoln. Matt threw a literal ton of work in our first year. Then, the volume shifted: he began paddling crude pots all to the beat of the man in black. New forms emerged by pounding clay into wooden molds carved with a chainsaw. Scuplted hand tools, intensive glaze tests and discusison on a particule size in clay bodies honed the work. I enjoy Matt's work because it has presence.
