About ten years ago Ellen and I were making pots at a friend's home. Perhaps it was a cooling day for the wood kiln, the day in between the firing and unloading. At one point, Ellen handed me a block of wood and said "see what you can do with this." She put the block in my hand. "I can't" was my first thought. This block is Ellen's tool, for Ellen's techniques, and besides I don't decorate. But hating to admit to any feelings of fear or inadequacy, I banished the thought and took the block. I began pressing it into the cheddar-hard clay as I had seen Ellen do.

We worked outside at a saw-horse table covered with our pots: her porcelain cups, my stoneware bowls. I considered the rim of a serving bowl. I patterned the clay: four impressions from the block's corner form an X. What a thrill to see my own patterns emerge from her technique!

The charge "see what you can do?" changed my pots. It also changed how I saw Ellen's work and caused me to reguard her work with renewed attention and appreciation. Using the block of wood helped me understand how energized the surface of a piece can become when texture, slip and glaze play off each other. That rolling, stacking, layering, punctuated, and constantly shifting energy is what I love most about Ellen's work. -- Louise Harter
