News from Earth and Fire -- April 4, 2007 That First Friday thing again...Tuesday, I had the door open to the 80 degree sunshine outside. But the forecast for the rest of the week showed big changes ahead. Of course, I'm particularly interested in what's going to be happening on Friday: From the weather guys at WUSA

Hey, I'll take it! This month at Earth and Fire Gallery, two of the nicest guys I've met, Shawn Grove and Bryan Mattraw are going to be the featured artists. They are both art teachers in the Loudoun County school system, and they share a studio and kiln a few miles north of Leesburg. In addition to their pots, they sent along a few pictures of a firing: Inside the Kiln
![]() Very little wasted space
See that little thing just to the right of center that looks like the top of a rooster? You mean this thing?
![]() Yeah.. that thing...
I beg the indulgence of the potters in the audience while I attempt a brief explanation. The little white things in that picture are called cones and they are used to tell how hot the kiln is. Before the firing, several cones, each with a different melting point, are placed on a shelf near a spot in the kiln where the potter can remove a brick and see inside during the firing. As the kiln heats, the cones with the lower melting points start to melt and bend over. In that way, the potter can keep track of when the kiln reaches a certain temperature. (I hope I did OK with that explanation. If not, I'm sure some friendly potter will let me know.) Now, lest you think that sounds pretty easy, it's not like opening your oven door to see how the pie is doing: What's going on in there?

One of the pots from either Shawn or Bryan comes with something special. If it is purchased Friday during the gallery walk (between 6 and 9 pm) the person who purchased it will receive either a $100 Gift Certificate at Tuscarora Mill Restaurant! or (for those who do not live in the area) a $100 Gift Certificate at Earth and Fire Gallery. Please come out and visit with Shawn and Bryan and take a chance on purchasing the Mystery Pot from the show! That's this Friday -- April 6, from 6 pm to 9 pm. New work from Sequoia Miller I knew I had some pots coming from Sequoia, so I waited until they got here to send this newsletter out. I'm sorry for the quality of some of the images. The sky was overcast (as you can see from the 7-day forecast on Tuesday -- it rained today) and the light was really poor upstairs. I tried using my lighter backdrop, but it didn't help much on some of them. I'll retake some of the images in the days to come, but I wanted to get them posted as soon as possible. Have a good week.
