News from Earth and Fire -- August 30, 2006 Does this font make my butt look big?Such a good daughter I am. Not only did I bring my mother three (not one, but THREE) mugs to try to replace that one she broke "with the place for her thumb," but I have also changed the font definition on the website so that she can now control the text size and enlarge it so it's easier for her to read. All you have to do is highlight a section of text, and then hold down the CTRL key as you turn the wheel on your mouse towards you and the font size will enlarge. Turn the wheel away from you, and it will get smaller. Check it out. (No.. it doesn't make the images get any bigger.) Same passion, different paths My featured artist for September's First Friday Gallery Walk is Boonsboro, MD potter Allison Severance. Allison and I probably both got bit by the clay bug at about the same time, but our shared passion took us along different paths thereafter. At one time, before I started the gallery, I actually thought about becoming a full-time potter and buying a place in the country where I could have a kiln and work all day in my studio making pots. What stopped me was realizing that the only thing I really (and I mean REALLY) liked about making pots was working with the wet clay on the wheel. That, for me, was magic. Everything else -- from preparing the clay, to trimming, to altering, to mixing glazes, to decorating, to firing -- well.. not so much. You're not a "real potter" if you just want to play in the mud. Allison, on the other hand is a "real potter." Fortunate to have a husband and family who didn't think she was nuts and supported her, Allison and her family moved from downtown Frederick out into the country near Boonsboro, MD, where she could have a studio and a wood-fired kiln. She apprenticed with Bill van Gilder (who, along with Colorado potter Blair Meerfeld, will be the featured artist at Earth and Fire Gallery in November) and she's already been featured in a number of prestigious exhibitions and publications. She was Bill's invited guest for the Five plus Five exhibition at Earth and Fire last March. (Lordy, that was some terrible photography back then, wasn't it?!) Allison brought her pots for the First Friday Opening into the gallery last week and she brought in some excellent work. I think this "Breakfast set" is a really cute idea:

Yes, that's THIS Friday, September 1, from 6 pm to 9 pm. I've added images of just a sampling of the pots that she brought. The best selection will be Friday night, of course, but Allison's work will be here until the end of September so if you can't make it out this weekend because of the holiday, please come after things settle down next week. Have a good week. Back to the Newsletter Archive list Contact us to join the mailing list or inquire about a specific piece.
