News from Earth and Fire -- February 27, 2008 You can't always get what you want I had a chance to snag some more pots from Sam Taylor over the weekend. I know several of you are collecting dinner plates from Sam, so I was hoping to get about four of those, and one lady has been in three times now hoping for a couple more of Sam's yunomi. She bought two of them in December, and she just loves them. She wants more. Sam only had two cups that even remotely resembled the yunomi that the woman wanted, but they also had a pirate pattern on them. The pirate pattern is something Sam's been doing for a couple of years -- it's basically a skull. Sam says he sells a bunch of them, but they just don't work for me, and I haven't been able to bring myself to actually buy any of them yet. And Sunday was no exception. I thought about the woman that wanted them, and I looked again at the pirate pattern, and I couldn't see it working out. I didn't see any plates, so I asked about them. "No plates in '08" Sam said, very matter-of-factly. I got the impression it was a phrase he had used many times over the course of the show. Eeeeeeek. That's what happens with artists, folks. Their work grows and evolves and changes, and for the most part, just gets better and better. So, I didn't bring back any yunomi or plates. But I did bring back some great pots (as always!). I'm hard-pressed to pick the one I like the best, but I suppose it would have to be one of the pasta bowls, since they caught my eye right off the bat: Sam Taylor

I'm not sure what the pattern on this bowl is (does it matter?), but it appeals to me, and I do love that green glaze he uses. Here are all of the new pots from Sam. I intended to bring back some pots from Sequoia Miller, too.. but he wasn't at the show this year. Like I say -- you can't always get what you want. I do the best I can -- considering I'm tapdancing on dirt. (Tell me where that reference is from in the message section of the shopping cart, I'll spot you $15 on your order.)
