News from Earth and Fire -- February 8, 2006 A trip down memory lane... It's official, the lease has been signed for the third (and hopefully the FINAL) home of Earth and Fire. It seems a fitting time to pause for a bit and take a look back at the last five years. When I first conceived the idea for the gallery, I envisioned it in a historical context -- a quaint location away from the hustle and bustle of a traditional mall, or the bland experience of a strip mall. Earth and Fire Pottery opened its doors on March 1, 2001 at 775 Station Street, in Herndon, VA. ![]() It was across the street from the W & OD trail, down the street from the Great Harvest Bread Company, and around the corner from the Dairy Queen. It was a cute little place and it felt very homey. For two years, the inventory was nothing but pots: ![]() In March of 2003, the gallery moved to Vienna, and into a new building that had been built to look like an old building: ![]() The Vienna location is a block away from the W & OD bike path, down the street from the Great Harvest Bread Company, and next door to Nielson's Frozen Custard. Over the last three years, the inventory broadened to include glass, metal, clocks, jewelry, mobiles, totebags, wooden boxes, photographs. ![]() ![]() The gallery will be open for one final day in Vienna this Saturday, February 11. (Yes, things are looking a bit sparse now: ![]() -- I was able to do the physical inventory that my accountant makes me do annually in about 30 minutes!): ... and then it's ON TO LEESBURG -- to 18 South King Street, the location for the past few years of The Carriage House. ![]() I'll have the entire building, and the total square footage is only a couple hundred square feet less than the actual gallery space in Vienna. I'll give up my storage space, but I'll regain that "homey" feel of the original location. This block of South King Street is really the heart of the historic downtown area, the very center of the First Friday Gallery Walks... ![]() ... and a charming place to spend an afternoon wandering in and out of unique little shops. (Parking is plentiful in either of two public parking garages within a block.) ![]() I haven't found the ice cream place yet, and Great Harvest Bread Company doesn't have a location in Leesburg (yet!), but the W & OD trail is about two blocks south. I have been ordering new inventory to arrive in late April, and as I said in the last newsletter, I plan to begin with regular gallery hours again in time for the First Friday Gallery Walk in May. I hope those of you in the area will mark your calendars and plan to come out and see the new place! Have a good week.
