News from Earth and Fire -- January 12, 2006

What's the plan?

The inventory reduction sale is progressing nicely. Thank you. I had originally anticipated that I'd have regular gallery hours until the middle of February, but it's possible that I will be open regular hours only for a few more weeks. There are still some GREAT pieces here. If you haven't made it in yet, please plan to do so soon.

I am still undecided about a future location. Right now, I'm leaning towards Leesburg, because of the established gallery community out there, and the First Friday Gallery Walks. Critical mass is a good thing. However, I refuse to be forced into signing a new lease because of a date on the calendar (March 1) and I have not yet found exactly what I'm looking for. Since the clock is ticking, what this means is that physically.. Earth and Fire will most likely go into a "holding pattern" (i.e., storage unit) for a short time.

The website, of course.. will go on as usual -- 24/7.

I have plans for an entirely new business model going forward. Without going into too much detail, the plans involve more shows, more work from local artists (in all media) and much more emphasis on the website. And if what you love about Earth and Fire are the wacky wine glasses from Wauhatchie Glass, or the little twisty ones from Elodie Holmes, the mobiles from HSU Studios or the metal tables, clocks and wall trees from Celestial Ironworks (not to mention the Bula Bags!) -- those things will still be around.

Of course there will be a transition period.. but I am confident that when the dust settles, Earth and Fire is only going to get better and better!

Old business

I see there are a couple of things I owe you yet: Pictures from my Christmas Dinner and answers to the "Who's the potter?" contest.

Christmas Dinner didn't turn out to be anything close to "traditional." When I asked my kids what they wanted for Christmas Dinner, they unaminously said they wanted margaritas, guacamole, and something called Pedro's Special, which recipe I found years ago in a little book called "The I Hate to Cook Book." (I don't actually hate to cook, but that's beside the point.)

Once again, things got away from us until the dishes were cleared, but this time, I thought, since it had been completely non-traditional, that I'd do something a little non-traditional for "the picture" for the newsletter

And so.. here's what it looked like when I remembered:

Yes. I use my pots and yes.. they go in my dishwasher.

The large green/orangey fluted bowl (Jeff Oestreich) in the bottom rack held the chips, and the guac was in the co-ordinating Jeff Oestreich bowl you see inverted in the near corner of the top rack.

Since I had the camera out, I figured I'd take it for a spin around the kitchen.

Ahhh.. my collection of yunomi. They are beginning to encroach a bit on the plates on the bottom shelf.

Moving on to the bowls/baking dishes:

I like knowing no matter what sized baking dish/serving bowl I need.. I've got it. (There's an art to the stacking...)

Next, we move on to that morning essential.. the coffee mug collection:

I like the mug trees because they don't take up a lot of real estate. (Wish someone would invent a yunomi tree.)

And finally, the mix n' match canisters:

These three are from Diana Thomas (left and center) and Karen Karnes (right).

And the other group:

Jeff Kleckner (left), Bob Brisco (center) and Del Martin (right). The utensil holder is one that I made at the peak of my pottery-making career. Not bad, huh? Quite a step up from those first attempts.

So, that's part of what All Pottery, All the Time looks like at my house. I haven't begun to show you the pots that aren't in regular use -- the ones whose primary function is contemplative.

Who's the potter?

The correct answers for the Guess the Potter Contest are:

Jeff Kleckner, Maren Kloppmann, Mark Shapiro, Linda Christianson, Sam Taylor, and Sequoia Miller. If you look closely (-- a sort of Where's Waldo), you can see Mark Shapiro's mug on my mug tree, and Jeff Kleckner's bowl in my bowl/baking dish cupboard.

That's it for now.

Have a good week.
