News from Earth and Fire -- May 31, 2007

What's it worth to you?

I want to follow along for a bit on the thoughts from the last newsletter about how we value art.

I read an article in the Business section of the Washington Post about our perceptions about money. Consider these two scenarios:

1. You had purchased a ticket for $20 and lost it. If you replaced the lost ticket, would you feel that the ticket had cost you $40? Most people said they would.

2. You had lost a $20 bill. If you purchased the $20 ticket at this point, would you feel that the ticket had cost you $40? Most people said they would not.

Perception.

We have perceptions about "worth," too.

Take the "offbeat wine glasses" at $53/each. Compared to a paper drinking cup sold in a package of 100 for $2.49, $53 is a bit high for a drinking vessel.

But is $53 too much for a unique and beautiful glass, handmade by an artist who spent several years learning his craft and refining his skill?

When you sit down at your table for a nice dinner, do you want to drink out of a paper cup?

I think it's about priorities. We spend money on things that are a priority to us.

Where is art on your priority list?

Is it above or below the monthly cable TV bill?

Make it an art weekend!

First Friday has rolled around again. This month I am featuring new work from Vermont potter Tom Homann. I will also have all of the remaining inventory from the estate of Byron Temple on display. No, not all the pots are shown on the website. First Friday is June 1, 6 - 9 pm.

In addition to First Friday, the Western Loudoun Studio Tour is happening this weekend.

I'm inviting myself along on the bandwagon.

I'll be here Sunday afternoon from 1 - 4 so you can swing by at some point on your tour.

Never too old to play in the mud

When I was in Wyoming a week or so ago, I saw an old friend of the family who has recently taken up pottery. He showed me some of the pots he had made and we chatted a bit about how much fun (and how challenging!) it is to discover a spark of creativity and let it out to play for just a bit.

Have a good week.
