News from Earth and Fire -- November 28, 2005 First things first... There was quite a response to the "what the heck is this and who made it" contest from last week. The correct answer is that the pot: ![]() is a French butter keeper. A portion of butter is put into the cavity in the lid, and then water is put into the cup. When the lid is replaced onto the cup, the water will "seal" the butter and it can be kept at room temperature without going rancid. The pot was made by Bill van Gilder. Since so many of you seemed to have a good time with that, I decided to have a similar contest this week, and also to spread out the reward a bit. Below are pictures of the first things I ever bought for myself from six of the potters in my gallery. Can you identify the potters for each of them? I believe there are two that are absolute "gimme's"... that all of you should have no trouble whatsoever identifying. Two others that should be fairly easy for more seasoned collectors to identify. And two that I think will be extremely difficult (I doubt I could identify them if I didn't know). I will offer a $5 gift certificate for each potter that you are able to identify. Guess two correctly, that's $10. Get all six.. you're looking at 30 Big Ones to spend at Earth and Fire. The first person to guess all six correctly will get a $50 gift certificate. (That's how hard I think the last two are!) First, the easy ones:
Serving Bowl
![]() and
Vase
![]() Now for the "intermediate level"
Mug
![]() and
Pitcher
![]() And finally, the head scratchers:
Cat
![]() and
Teapot
![]() All the potters have work visible from the Main Artists Page, so just spend a few minutes wandering around, and secure yourself an easy Ten-Spot (at least). Deadline for contest entries will be five minutes before I upload the answers in another newsletter. Good luck and have fun. I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving. I brought my digital camera home, with the intention of taking a picture of my table -- just before we sat down for our meal -- to show you how "all pottery, all the time" looks at my house, and how well all the different pots "go together" even though they were made by many different artists. But then in all the last-minute hub-bub of making gravy, and mashing the potatoes and getting the asparagus to the table before it got cold, the idea was forgotten until I looked around as we were putting the last dish in the dishwasher. OK, so that didn't work out. Maybe for Christmas. Have a good week. Back to the Newsletter Archive list Contact us to join the mailing list or inquire about a specific piece.
